I'm sure that with one look at gas prices, we all wish that there was some way...ANY way to fuel up besides with gasoline. Well, have you ever considered GROWING fuel? Yes, pretty much anything with ethanol (such as corn) can be used as a fuel.
Even Henry Ford banned the idea of ethanol fuels, for oil was cheaper to boot. Only in 2000 did we not let our greed get in the way of "going green" when Archer Daniels Midland (who is the country's largest ethanol producer) reinstated the idea.
Unfortunately, burning ethanol wasn't exactly "going green" as expected. It gave off a lot of Carbon Dioxide, and I'm sure that we all know why that's bad.
If you move south for a few thousand miles, you'll see that Brazil is working long and hard for a solution. After long hours of waiting in ethanol fuel lines, they modified a small soccer ball from a commuter car and the new fuel was a hit! Sugarcane was the real hero of this. It didn't need the expensive process of being broken down into sugars, it was already 20% sugar. Plus, it held twice more alcohol to the acre than corn.
Unfortunately, even this brilliant solution had to be critiqued. What about the people dying of starvation in their own country? Food ethanol was dropped. Instead, Brazil's using other things. They've switched to cellulose-filled items. These include nature's own...termites!
I'm sorry if you don't want your car to be filled with termite guts, but scientists are STILL looking for a better solution. Though, I can assure you of one thing. Pretty soon, gasoline will be no more.
